As the Capital of the state of Victoria, and the second largest city in Oz, Melbourne certainly has a huge range of activities to offer its visitors. From boutique shopping and art galleries to fine dining and botanical gardens, there is something for all ages and tastes. Yet, did you know that it also has some of the best water sports in Melbourne? We take a look at some of the most popular and thrilling water sports activities to do in Melbourne.
Scuba Diving
One of the best ways to explore the underwater world is by scuba diving. Beginners can take several lessons prior to scuba diving (often in a pool) to make sure they they are comfortable in the water. Pros with PADI certificates are able to hire scuba gear and explore the ocean themselves. The best scuba diving spots are located out of town in areas such as Mornington Peninsula.
Jet Ski
One of the funniest and most exhilarating and exciting things to do in Melbourne is to travel overland is on a jet ski. Luckily, Melbourne has a number of companies which offer jet ski rentals for one hour upwards. One of the best places to take a jet ski to the waters is also in Mornington Peninsula, as the calmer waters make it much safer and enjoyable during the summer months.
Wakeboarding
While it may not be as popular as day scuba diving, kayaking or water skiing Melbourne, wakeboarding is an incredibly fun water sport that will leave you with an adrenaline rush like no other. This type of activity requires balance, focus and strength. But don’t be put off by the hard work, skilled teachers are on hand to guide you through the process and get you up on the board in no time. There are schools from which you can hire equipment like a wake surfboard and ski rope, or you can step up your game and purchase high-quality gear you need for wakeboarding, kneeboard and other water ski gear at the store nearby.
Parasailing
How about seeing all that Melbourne has to offer from up in the skies? One (slightly hair-raising) way to do this is by parasailing. If you’ve never tried this before then we highly recommend giving it a shot if you are brave enough. It literally feels like you are flying above the water. Parasailing experiences are offered by several companies along the Melbourne coastline.
Snorkeling
If Scuba diving isn’t your thing then why not try your hand at snorkelling? Although the city centre doesn’t have any snorkelling hot spots, you can take a trip to Mornington Peninsula which has clear waters which are perfect for a spot of underwater exploring. Day trips are available which include a guide, snorkelling equipment, lunch and life jackets.
Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the most popular water activities in Melbourne, as the more sheltered waters in the Yarra River provide a good spot to paddle in. Rent a one or two-man kayak and take a trip with a friend. There are also guided kayak sightseeing tours available, and even one which departs at night for a moonlight adventure.
Speed Boating
If you have the cash to flash then hiring a speedboat is one of the most memorable experiences that you can share with friends and family. A private captain will be able to drive the boat for you and take you to some of the most spectacular places along the Melbourne coastline. Half and full day speedboat tours are available and some include a BBQ lunch or dinner.
Surfboard
Melbourne in a surfing mecca and for good reasons. In fact, some people call Victoria one of the premier surfing destinations in the world. The sheltered water in the city may not make the best spot for surfing pros, so those who look for something challenging should head out to Bells Beach and Fairhaven for larger waves. Surf schools are dotted around the coastline and provide a way for you to get some practice in before hitting the waters. Surfboard is also available to rent, as are wetsuits.
SUP
SUP, also known as a stand-up paddleboard, is a fun and adventurous way to explore Melbourne’s beautiful coastline. It’s a great workout too, as moving the board encourages you to use your core muscles and be more balanced. There are guided SUP tours available in the calmer waters of St.Kilda, and private lessons are also available. If you have has some experience with Stand up paddle boarding then you can simply rent a board for an hour or two and take to the water without an instructor.
